Vikas Krishan Storms into the Semifinals of the World Boxing Championships at Baku

Vikas Krishan (69 kgs) stormed into the Semifinals of the AIBA World Boxing Championships at Baku last night and assured himself of atleast a Bronze Medal. A win in the semifinals will change the colour of the medal to Gold or Silver. In Qr final bout, he defeated Belous Vasili of Moldova by a narrow margin of 9:8 pts. Voice Recording of Vikas Krishan?s reaction after Winning the Qr Final bout and those of the National Coach Mr GS Sandhu and Cuban Coach Mr BI Fernandez are attached.

The other Qr Finalists Devendro Singh (49 kgs), Manoj Kumar (64 kgs) and Jai Bhagwan put up brave fights against their opponents but were unfortunate to lose. However all three of them and Vikas have qualified for the London Olympics.

A special word of thanks to the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and the Sports Authority of India for their whole hearted support in the preparation of the Indian Boxing Team for the World Championship. Dr LS Ranawat, Regional Director, NIS Patiala and his team have also provided excellant support for the Indian Boxing Team without which this phenomenal result would not have been possible. The totally positive approach of the Hon'ble Sports Minister Shri Ajay Maken has given us the confidence that the Ministry and SAI would be fully supportive to the boxers and the National Coaching Camps so as to win medals for the country at the london Olympics 2012.

It would also be pertinent to mention that in addition to the Indian Support Staff and Coaches, there were two very important Indian Officials who have contributed immensely to the success of Boxing at the World Boxing Championships at Baku. Mr Kishen Narsi who is an AIBA EC Member is in the Technical Jury and Mr Jay Kowli an International Referee & Judge is a Technical Official at this Championship. Mr Jay Kowli?s performance as a Referee & Judge in this Championship has been of a very high order and he is one of the best Referees of this Tournament. Our sincere thanks to both these officials for keeping India's flag flying high amongst the AIBA Technical Officials.

Tomorrow ie. 6th Oct will be a rest day and the semifinals will be on 07 Oct 2011.
