Andhra Pradesh Dominates Quarter-Final Action At The Sub-Junior Nationals

The 2nd Sub-Junior National Championships entered its quarter-final phase with action heating up at the North Eastern Hills University Campus in Mawlai, Shillong. These young boys with oversized gloves mesmerized the crowds with their enthusiasm and determination to take the first step towards recognition at the national arena. At this stage of the championship Andhra Pradesh were the front runners with nine boxers having made it to the round of eight. The state of Jharkhand was a close second with eight boxers. But there was disappointment for defending champions, the services team, as only 4of their pugilists were able to qualify.

The Andhra boxers continued their good run of form in the quarters as well. Techi Bida opened for the southern state with a thumping victory over Raja Chettri of Meghalaya in the 32 and under weight category of the 12 year age group. In the same age cluster Nelli Sudheer made a meal of Shubham Mishra, overpowering the Maharashtra boy for a 15:3 win on points. Sima Phaneendra had little trouble tearing through the defence of Deepanshu Saklani of Uttrakhand. He won by a huge margin of 12 points to move into the semi-finals. In the 13 year old bracket, Vadisala Jyothi Swaroop, a reigning national champion upstaged Rabindra Rabidas of SPSB. Rabidas a bronze medallist at the 1st sub-junior championships did not offer much resistance to the Andhra lad, who advanced to the round of four with an 8:4 win on points. Chitranand Yerinnti, who bagged the gold at the inaugural edition of the championship, inched closer to his second sub-junior national title with a victory over Emmanuel Jacob Hall of Tamil Nadu. Harikrishna Nammi also steam rolled whatever little opposition he received from Shiv Kumar of Punjab to secure his semi-final berth. As the day was winding down, Andhra Pradesh seemed to be holding a firm grip on the tag of favourites to clinch the title. It has been a stellar performance by the Andhra boys, who have outshone the traditional powerhouses of Indian boxing like SSCB and Haryana
