Junior Boxers Arrive in Ukraine for The AIBA Junior World Boxing Championship

The Indian Junior (Sub-Junior) boxing team that had been training at Limassol, Cyprus have now made their way to the Ukraine and are all set to partake in the AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships. The Championships is scheduled to be held at the capital city of Kiev in Ukraine and will go on till 16th September 2013. An 18 member team consisting of 15 boxers and 3 coaches engaged in 20 day long training programme at Cyprus, which included the host team and select boxers from Russian and Uzbekistan – The tour was a part of Indian Amateur Boxing Federation‘s preparation of the Sub-Junior team for the 2013 World Championships. Out of the 18 members 10 (including 9 short-listed boxers and a coach) directly progressed to Kiev, Ukraine for the mega event.  

The AIBA World Junior Championships welcomes international boxers in 13 weight categories to compete against the best in their division. It is an occasion to celebrate boxing’s youngest practitioners in the international arena. The AIBA World Junior Championships, held every two years, goes back to 2001 with its debut in Baku, Azerbaijan. Formerly called the AIBA Cadet World Championships, the AIBA World Junior Championships is open to boxers aged 15 and 16.  Over the next 10 days 351 boxers from 52 countries will be vying for the coveted title of Junior World Champion in Kiev.

As per Coach-in-Charge Mohinder Singh Dhaka the preparation of the Indian team has been of a high standard and the boxers are in the best shape. He said, “This is a big test for our boys. We have been working hard at the National Coaching Camps and are ready for this challenge and I am sure we will return with a favourable result”. Coach Dhaka also pointed out the significance of the good outing the Indian team had at the ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships in Kazakhstan in April this year. “We have performed well so far including a good result at the Continental Championships, where we bagged four medals including one Gold Medal. The good performances have boosted the confidence of our boxers and have put them in a good rhythm”, He expressed.

Former Sub-Junior National Champion Prayag Chauhan (60kg), who bagged the light weight Asian title by winning the gold medal at the Continental Championships, will lead the Indian charge at the Kiev. Bronze medal winner at Asian Championships, Vishnu Dayanand Chayal (57kg) and Aditya Maan (66kg) will also stake a claim for a podium finish at the World Championship. Gaurav Solanki (48kg) and Ashish Kumar (63kg) will also be ones to look out for in their respective weight division.

The first day of competition (8 September 2013), will see two Indian boxers take to the canvases at Kiev. Ankush Dahiya will lock horns with Sergey Getevonyan from Armenia while Puskar Singh (54kg) will take on Hungarian boxer Krisztofer Berki.
