Day Two Action From The 3rd Inter-Zonal Women?s National Championship

Day two at the Anna Thidal Sports Complex in Puducherry and the second phase of semi-final action continued in full swing at the 3nd Inter-Zonal Senior Women Boxing Championship. The field of contention got tougher with each bout with the likes of four-time Asian Champion L Sarita Devi (60kg) and Youth World and Reigning National Champion Sarjubala Devi (48kg) of Manipur along with Asian Cup bronze medallist Kavita Chahal (+81kg) standing in for the IABF team having already made a place in the semi-finals displaying some unrelenting fervour on the first day of quarter-final bouts.

The day got off to a blistering start when, in the fly weight division, bronze medallist at the 10th National Championships, Sudesh representing the IBF team blazed through to the semi-finals defeating P Nirosha of the South Zone. Nirosha a silver medal winner at the previous edition of the tournament didn?t stand a chance against the attacking play of Sudesh. The 23 year old from Chandigarh won the bout 17:5 on points. She will now take on 2011 Federation Cup bronze medallist, Saroj from Haryana who, pulverized Narmatha J of the North East Zone on her way to the semis.??

In the feather weight class Sarika Kumari, a former Junior National Champion playing for the centre zone registered an easy victory over Shifali of the North East Zone to advance to the round of four. The 17 year old boxer from Madhya Pradesh overpowered her more experienced compatriot 22:9 on points. In the next round she will lock horns with Ritu Kumari from the East Zone, who had to dig deep against Kalpna from Haryana. The other half of the draw in the same weight class saw M Meena Kumari of Manipur, a bronze medallist at the recently concluded Senior National Championships hammer Munesh of the IBF team. The 22 year old was leading 7:1 in the first round when the referee decided to spare Munesh of any further agony and award victory to Meena.?Former Youth National Champion and 12th Senior Nationals silver medallist E Memthoi Devi of Manipur also advance the round of last four defeating Pinky Chahal of the IBF team. The National Games silver medallist had little trouble getting rid of Chahal, who could not withstand the offensive onslaught of the Manipuri boxer. Memthoi won 21:8 on points.

The third edition of the tournament to be held from December 21st to 24th, 2011, will be home to spectacular action. The unique format of the Inter-Zonals will showcase top class boxers from 10 teams, consisting of six zones (North, South, East, West, North East and Centre) along with the IBF team, hosts Puducherry and top two teams at the 12th Senior National Championship (Haryana and Manipur).
