India Assured Of A Broze At The Youth Commonwealth Games

Rahul Poonia's assured himself of a bronze medal finish registering a victory in the quarter-final bout of the light flyweight category at the on-going Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Mann. The Cuban Youth Olympics gold medallist, who trashed Carlos Antonio Mandjate of Mozambique with a huge margin on points 21:4 in the round of 16, advanced to the semi-finals with his Malawi opponent Israel Kammwamba retireing due to injury.

But there was disappointment for Indian in the tn the fly weight section though. Balakrishna Vankala a silver medallist at the 2011 Cuban Youth Olympic Games went down against Josh John of Wales. But the reigning Youth National Champion put up a stiff fight against, he matched his opponent punch for punch. In the end though , t was the Welsh boxer who emerged triumphant on points 12:14.

The evening session of the play will witness another Cuban Youth Olympics gold medallist Surender Singh of India take on Nathan Thorley of Wales in the middle weight section.

Meanwhile, in the light heavy weight segment, India's Sumit Sangwan, a current national champion and a silver medallist at last years Asian Youth Men's Boxing Championship, will lock horns with Jack Massey of England in a much awaited clash later tonight. (Competition in the above two categories begins at the quarter-final stage).

The competition slated to be held from the 7th to 13th of September will be one of the most prestigious sporting events ever to be hosted on the island, with a total of 64 Commonwealth nations set to attend. The 4th Youth Commonwealth Games will be contested in seven sporting discipline, including; Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Cycling, Gymnastics, Rugby 7's & Swimming.
