Devendro And Jai Make It To The Pre-Quarters

Debutant L Devendro Singh (49kg) continued to dazzle with his performance at the 2011 AIBA World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. The 19 year old, making his first appearance at the championships, thrashed Velazquez Joselito of Mexico, who was powerless against his relentless offence and overall game. The victory sees the Manipur lad make it to the pre-quarterfinal stage of the tournament. Commonwealth Games bronze-medallist Jai Bhagwan (60kg) also advanced to the last 16 of his weight category with a comprehensive win over Czech Miroslav Serban.

Devendro, playing in the light fly weight division had begun his world championship campaign outshining Asylbek Nazaraliev of Kyrgyzstan in the opening round.? In the round of 32, against Joselito, he made his intentions quite clear at the very beginning. ?The feisty boxer kept attacking from the start, not giving his opponent any respite; by the end of the first round the score was 19:7.? Devendro continued the stretch the lead in the second and third round as well; the Mexican boxer was completely at bay and had no answer to the Indian onslaught. He went on to secure his place in the round of 16 with a massive 40:19 victory. Devendro will fight for a place in the quarters with 7th seed Carlos Quipo of Ecuador on the 4th of October.

In the light weight category, Jai continued his purple patch registering an easy win over his Czechoslovakian opponent. The 26 year old dictated the terms, leading throughout the nine minutes of play, never allowing Miroslav to settle into a rhythm. The 2009 Asian Championship silver medallist booked a spot in the pre-quarters with a 14:6 win. His opponent in the round of 16 will be European Championship quarter-finalist and seventh seed David Joyce of Ireland.

The evening session of play on Monday will see 2006 Commonwealth gold medallist Akhil Kumar (56kg) take on world number 4 John Nevin of Ireland, while Asian Games silver medallist Manpreet Singh (91kg) will open his world championship campaign against Dzhakon Qurbanov of Tijikistan.
