Indian Team Leaves For Aiba Junior Mens World Boxing Championship In Astana, Kazakhstan

The second AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships are all set to get underway in Astana, Kazakhstan. The Championship to be held from July 20 – July 31, 2011 will display emerging boxing talents from all over the world battling it out for top honours. Young Indian pugilists will now get the opportunity to tread on the lines of their senior counter parts who, before making a name for themselves on the senior tour, made headway at this level of the sport.

A thirteen member Indian Team including eight boxers, three coaches, one doctor and a manager, left Delhi on Tuesday to partake in the mega event. The AIBA World Junior Championships, held every two years, goes back to 2001 with its debut in Baku, Azerbaijan. Formerly called the AIBA Cadet World Championships, the AIBA World Junior Championships is ‘the’ event for boxers aged 15 and 16. Boxing at this level is traditionally a first opportunity to witness future world champions and Olympic heroes. With the participation numbers growing each year, in synchronisation with the level of skill shown in the ring, the AIBA World Junior Championships is a premier event on the AIBA events calendar.

The 2009 World Junior Men’s Boxing Championships saw India bag 4 medals with one silver and three bronze. Coach-in-charge of the junior team Mohinder Dhaka is confident of a good showing and believes the team will better their previous performance. He expressed, “We have been preparing well for the championships. Every boy has been trained individually; we have worked very hard to enhance their strengths and perfect their technique.” Talking about India’s medal prospects Coach Dhaka added, “It is the world championships the biggest tournament at any level of the sport and with countries like Russian, Cuba, Uzbekistan, England and many others participating the competition is not going to be easy, but I am hopeful of at least winning four medals”.

Shyam Kumar Kakara a gold medallist at the 1st Sub Junior National Boxing Championship last year will be leading the Indian charge in Astana. Shyam, who also won a gold medal in Kazakhstan in the invitation boxing tournament last year is confident of doing well and making a name for himself at the international arena. Buoyant with confidence the reigning sub-junior national champion says, “It is a big opportunity to be representing our country at the world championships and I am sure I am going to do well”.

Representing India in the 48 kilogram division would be PL Prasad. Prasad a reigning junior national champion who also bagged a silver medal at the 2010 Invitation boxing tournament in Kazakhstan is not over awed by the enormity of the event and wants to take it one fight at a time, “See it is the world championships so everyone will be gunning for the top spot. I am just thinking about my first fight. It will be good learning opportunity for me and I hope to do well”, he said.”
Naveen Kumar who won gold at the 2011 President Heydar Aliyev Cup at Baku, Azerbaijan will be fighting in the 50 kilogram weight class. Coach Dhaka has high hopes for the services boxer and believes he has a good chance of clinching a gold medal. Naveen also a title holder in his weight division at the 1st Sub Junior National Boxing Championship this year is keenly looking forward to compete in the championships and says “We have had a very good training going into the championships and a gold medal is what I am looking at”.

The Junior Championships will be staged in 13 weight categories with three (3) rounds of two (2) minutes each. The bouts will be scored as per the new AIBA Scoring System which made its debut at the first edition of the AIBA Women’s Junior/Youth World Boxing Championship. It is an occasion to celebrate boxing’s youngest practitioners on the international stage. A new competition name for this age group is structured to revitalise boxing at this level and to illustrate the on-going enhancement that AIBA is achieving across all of its properties.
