Indian Youth Team Leaves For Duel Championship in Sri Lanka

A 13 member Indian boxing team consisting of 3 women and 4 men boxers along with a support staff of 3 coaches, 1 R/J and the undersigned as the manager, will leave the capital city of Delhi on Thursday (29-11-12) to partake in a duel boxing championship between India and Sri Lanka. The contest, being organised by Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka, will be held in Colombo on 1st December 2012.

India and Sri Lanka have long shared a congenial relationship in the sport of boxing. The two neighbouring nations have over the years played an important role in providing training and competition platforms for emerging boxers both in the men’s and women’s discipline of the sport. Our national boxing camps and nurseries have always been open to training programs involving boxers from Sri Lanka and other South Asian Nations. In the coming future leading up to the Rio 2016 Olympic we intend to further strengthen our ties through various other competitive and training programs.

Since the eligibility criteria for the competition encompasses men and women boxers between 17 and 34 years the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation has decided to field youth boxers. The Indian boxers selected are keenly looking forward to make mark and gain experience from this competition. The event will act as a worthy exposure tour for the budding athletes and will offer them a favourable challenge and a chance to rub shoulders with experienced pugilists. The tournament will also provide the selected boxers a better sense of competition at the international senior level.

Coach-in-charge of the Youth Women Indian boxing team Mr IV Roa, who will be accompanying the team expressed, “This is a fresh batch of boxers with not much international experience and we intend to provide them ample exposure through such events. This will be a good tournament for our youth boxers and will act as a fine preparatory event for the World Championships and the Asian Championships for the women participants.
