Shyam, Abhay And Malkhan Bow Out Of Aiba Junior Mens World Boxing Championship In Astana, Kazakhstan

In stark contrast to the opening day of second AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, the second day was bit of a dampener for the Indian camp. Shyam Kumar Kakara (46kg), Abhay Singh (54kg) and Malkhan (60kg) lost their quarter-final bouts bringing their campaign at the championships to an end. But the three Indian pugilists did not go down without giving their opponents a run for their money.

Shyam Kumar playing in the pin weight category was up against Dmytro Zamotayev of Ukraine. Shyam, who won a gold medal in Kazakhstan in the invitation boxing tournament, did not start well and was down a four point deficit after the opening six minutes of play. But Indian staged a stunning comeback, scoring eight points alone in the third round. Unfortunately in spite of his valiant efforts, the reigning national champion came up short. The Ukrainian won 15:12 in the end but it was a well fought bout for the Vizag boy who did no harm to his reputation with his inspiring performance. In the end the better boxer won.

It what was another hard fought contest when national champion in the light weight category Malkhan locked horns with Fraser Gorn of Scotland. After three rounds of intense action, where Malkhan matched his opponent punch for punch, it was the Scottish player who triumphed with a score of 13:12. Once again the Indian pugilists proved his mettle before going down in an enthralling bout.

Abhay Singh, the last Indian in the fray suffered similar fate as his team mates, against Samuel Ball also of Scotland in the bantam weight division. The scores were knotted at 5 all after the first round. But the Scottish player took the game away from the Haryana lad in the second and third. The 16 year old ultimately lost 11:17, but not before showing glimpses of his talent.

Day three of the championship will witness three Indian take to the rings in the round of sixteen. While Lalitha Prasad Polipalli (48kg) will take on Luke McCormack of England, Manish Kaushik (52kg) will be up against Sultan Zhanyshev of Kirgizstan and Sandeep Kumar (57kg) will fight Yerbolat Yermekov of Kazakhstan.
