Youth Pugilists Leave For Agalarov Cup in Azerbaijan

Young Indian boxers will look to strengthen the foundations of their careers as they participate in the 2012 A. Agalarov Cup – an international youth boxing tournament scheduled to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan from 19th – 24th December’ 2012. An eight member youth men’s boxing team, consisting of six boxers and two coaches left for the capital city of Azerbaijan in the early hours of Wednesday (19 Dec 2012) from Delhi to compete in the prestigious event.

India now boasts of a strong bank of youth boxers, who have over the last decade consistently been doing well in the global circuit of the game. The recently concluded AIBA Youth World Boxing Championship in Yerevan, Armenia saw India’s best ever performance in the competition in terms of number of medals, with three podium finishes; one silver and two bronze. The Indian Amateur Boxing Federation aims at further enhancing the level of the game by providing young athletes with ample international exposure. To this effect, and as a part of the boxers’ preparation for Youth Asian Boxing championship to be held next year, IABF has fielded a team for this tournament.

Chief Coach of the Indian Youth team, G Manoharan said that strong boxing countries like Russian, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and few teams from the host nation have been a part of the this tournament in the past and this year as well the level of competition will be extremely good. He stated, “This exposure tour is a part of our long term development plan for the youth team and will help in our preparations for the Youth Asian Boxing Championship. He further stated, “Competitions like these are a stepping stone in a young boxers career and play a very significant role in the overall development”. In the previous edition of the tournament in 2011, the youth Indian glove men returned with three medals – Ajay Kumar bagged the gold in the bantam weight division, while Dheeraj and Rohit Tokas clinched the bronze medal in the fly weight and the light weight divisions respectively. This year as well, the Indian team is confident of a good showing at the event although the composition is of a second string team. Coach CP Vilasini Bijilal, who is accompanying the team to Baku said, “We are fielding a team of young boxers who haven’t had much exposure at the international level. But the boys have shown a lot of promise in the training camps and I am positive that we will return with a rich medal haul”.

A Silambarsan (52kg) will lead the Indian charge at Baku. The 17 year old gave a glimpse of his boxing capabilities at the recently concluded Indo-Sri Lanka Duel Boxing Championship in Colombo, where he won the gold medal and the best boxer trophy. The two time silver medallist at the Junior National Boxing Championships is keenly looking forward to make his mark in the competition. He said, “We have been training hard at the National Camp for the past few months and this competition will provide a good platform to test our skills and prove our mettle.”

Former Sub-Junior National Champion Abhishek Beniwal (81kg), a participant of the Youth Cuban Olympic Games, will also be seen in action along with reigning Youth National champion Aman Indora (56kg).
