Manipur Girls Reign Havoc At The Inter-Zonal Championships

Manipur girls reigned havoc in the rings of the Anna Thidal Sports Complex at Puducherry in the 3nd Inter-Zonal Senior Women Boxing Championship with an enthralling display of agility and aggression.

Reigning Asian and former World fly weight Champion L Sarita Devi continued her wining spree claiming the gold medal with another spectacular performance. The 29 year old veteran boxer was at her menacing best as she devoured her opponent Poonam, playing for the North Zone. The Manipur boxer never allowed Poonam a fleeting chance to settle down, she lead throughout the eight minutes of play, finally claiming the Inter-zonal title with a whopping score of 35:9.

Following the footsteps of her state comrade, Youth World Champion Sarjubala Devi capped of a brilliant performance claiming the ?Zonal Crown? in the light fly weight division. Up against Neetu from Haryana, the pint sized dynamo blazed through the defence of the Haryana boxer, who had no answer to the offensive onslaught she had to undergo. Sarjubala claimed her second title in the domestic circuit, after the Senior National Championships, with a 35:6 victory on points. The new teenage sensation of women?s boxing who, till very recently was making inroads in her opponents defence in the youth division, has seemed to have adapted in the senior circuit with the same zest and vigour. Inspired by her idol MC Mary Kom, Sarjubala promises to have a bright future in the world of women?s boxing.

Former Youth National Champion and 12th Senior Nationals silver medallist E Memthoi Devi and bronze medallist at senior nationals M Meena Kumari also of Manipur, displayed brilliant skills in their respective weight categories to register similar victories and claim the yellow metal. Fighting against Seema of West Zone, Memthoi started slow in the first round, but soon gathered pace. In the end the 19 year old powered through to the finish line with a 17:6 win on points. Meena, who was up against Sarika Kumari from the Central Zone, carried on the exceptional performance of the Manipur boxers in the tournament. With the help of some exquisite combinations she hammered her opponent in another lopsided contest, eventually prevailing with a score 20:5 on points. Unfortunately four gold medals were not enough for the North Eastern State to claim top honours, the team had to settle with the runner?s up trophy. But the performance on display at the final day of the 3nd Inter-Zonal Senior Championship by these Manipuri girls speaks volumes for the kind of talent the state is nurturing in the sport of boxing.

With four gold, one silver and four bronze medals the North Zone team took top honours in the tournament, while the central zone brought up the third spot with five silver and two bronze medals.
