2nd Sub-Junior Womens National Boxing Championship Gets Underway In Coimbatore

JCT College of Engineering in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu came to life on Sunday, as the 2nd Sub-junior women’s national boxing championship got underway in the southernmost part of the Indian Peninsula. The second edition of the tournament to be held from July 24 - 28, 2011, will be home to some spectacular action as the young budding aspirants of women’s boxing in India take the first step towards recognition at the national arena. Featuring 22 teams from all over the country with almost 150 boxers, the five-day championship has been divided into three categories - girls of age 14 (Group A), 13 (Group B) and 12 (group C). 100 medals would be on stake in 25 weight classes spread over the above mentioned three age groups. The event is being organised by the Tamil Nadu Amateur Boxing Association under the aegis of Indian Boxing Federation. Mr Pon Bhaskaran, Organising Secretary and the president TNABA believes this event will help increase the popularity of the sport at the grass root level, “It is our endeavour to take boxing to the district level of the state and to make more popular and via this event, this competition it will also encourage more girls to take up the sport”.

It also adds to the bank of boxers in the country. Tournaments like these are the need of the hour with women’s boxing picking up rapid pace in India as well as the rest of the world".

The inaugural day of the tournament started with a bang as Puja Bahera representing Jharkhand, in the 38 kg weight category of the 14 year age group, caused an upset hammering Swati Bajpai of Uttar Pradesh in a one sided contest. Puja beat the Swati, bronze medallist at the 14th Sub-Junior Women U.P. State Boxing Championship easily with a score of 15:1 to make her way to the next round.

Nisha Jatav of Madhya Pradesh, a gold medallist at the 1st Sub-junior women’s national boxing championship had little trouble making it to the next round as she trounced Anchu Sabu of Kerala in the 42 kilogram weight class of the 14 year old age group. Jatav was leading 6 nil in the first round when the referee decided to stop the contest.

The 36 kilogram weight division in the 13 year old group witness a close contest in the form of Usha Rani Vankayala of Andhra Pradesh versus Gurpreet of Rajasthan. Usha Rani a bronze medal winner at the 1st Sub-junior women’s national boxing championship, was leading 3:1 after the second round of play but the Rajasthan girl came back strongly in the third to take 2 points without letting Usha score any. But in the end it was Usha who triumphed on individual judge’s score.

The 2nd edition of the tournament will continue to provide emerging boxers an excellent platform to improve their level of performance and will also serve as a selection ground for top pugilists to make a cut in to the Indian camp.
