India Off To Great Start At The Aiba Junior World Boxing Championships

A record-breaking 52 nations have registered to compete in the second AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships that got underway in Astana, Kazakhstan on Saturday. And the Indian tricolour was flying high on day one of the championship as three Indian pugilists took to the stage and all three registered easy victories to make their way into the next round of the tournament. The event that is schedule to be held from July 20 – July 31, 2011 saw Manish Kaushik (52kg), Sandeep Kumar (57kg) and Lalitha Prasad Polipalli (48kg) defeat their respective opponents to make their place in the round of sixteen.

Manish playing opened for India against Aaron Crossan of Australia in the fly weight category. A bronze medallist in the President Heydar Aliyev Cup in Baku, Azebijan earlier this year, Kaushik dominated proceedings from the get and never gave his opponent even a fleeting chance to get back in the game. He led 3 nil in the first round, before making it 7:1 after the second. In the end he won by virtue of points 11:2.

In the 57 Kilogram weight class, Sandeep Kumar took on Erem Aggul of Germany. Like his compatriot Sandeep too marched his way into the pre-quarters with a resounding victory. A silver medallist at the 26th Junior national boxing championship was leading 5:2 after the second round of play, when he launched into an all-out offensive against his opponent where his score six points. He won the bout with a score of 11:4. LP Prasad too defeated Hughie of Ireland in a lopsided contest 12:4 to become the third Indian boxer in the pre-quarters. It was a great start for the Indian team – a perfect blend of skill and good technique displayed by the Indian boxers on day one of the championships.
