Junior Boxers Leave for Training-Cum-Competition in Uzbekistan

Mohinder Singh Dhaka the Coach-in-charge for the Sub-Junior Men’s National boxing team has been handling the reins of the Indian colts for over a decade now. It has been his indomitable presence that has unearthed and nurtured rudiment talent into formidable fighters and prepared them for the next level of the sport. Dhaka, the uncompromising disciplinarian, is known for his abilities to spot high-quality boxers and to get the best out of them. Under his tutorship some of the best of the business in the country started their journey as amateur boxers and have moved on to bigger prospects. All seven Indian pugilists that qualified for the 2012 London Olympics trained under him at some point or the other in their careers. The young quartet of Vikas Krishan (69kg), Shiva Thapa (56kg), Sumit Sangwan (81kg) and Devendro Singh (49kg) being perfect examples, who came through the ranks with his guidance and support. His forthcoming and prominent additions into the Junior/Youth national camps would be the likes of Junior World Boxing Championships silver medallist Naveen Kumar (52kg) and bronze medal winner at the same event Sandeep Kumar (57kg).  Coach Dhaka believes this level of the sport plays a vital role in the professional development of an athlete, and points out that no one stage, be it sub-junior, junior or senior can be singled out as the most significant period of learning. “As a sportsman you learn, develop and mature every day; from the day you pick up those gloves each phase is a big learning curve and is as important as the other”, he said.“The most recognition for boxers is obviously received at the senior level of the sport; and for us as well it is very rewarding to see them do well and win laurels for the country”, he adds with a smile.

A New Challenge
Every few of years, as his wards make way to the next level of game, coach Dhaka and his deputies are faced with the hard task of starting all over again and building a new team. The sub-junior national coach now aims to strengthen the foundations of a new batch of boxers as they travel to Yangiabad, Uzbekistan to partake in a joint training-cum-competition programme with the host team. A team of 10 boxers accompanied with two coaches left the capital city of Delhi for the exposure tour early on Monday (15 October 2012). The veteran coach believes the training programme, which is schedule to go on till the 7th of November 2012, will act as a perfect platform for these young glovemen to gain international experience and break into the global circuit. He said, “This is a fresh batch of boxers and none of them have had any international exposure, this trip will be very useful for them as it will help them overcome the initial hiccups and build their confidence.” He further stated, “The level of competition and the players that we expect to encounter in Uzbekistan will be at par with our standards. There will be joint trainings and sparring sessions with the Uzbekistan National team and the competition bouts will be of a friendly nature, therefore there won’t be any pressure”.

This training cum competition also assumes added importance considering the preparation of the Indian sub-junior team for the AIBA Junior World Championships that is scheduled to be held next year and the other mega events on the AIBA junior circuit.
