Services Claim top Honours at the Junior Nationals in Punjab

The Services boys continued their good run in Patiala at the 45th Junior Men’s National Championships with another brilliant performance in the Championship round of the tournament. The boys in the uniform who have done exceptionally well throughout the tournament were no different on the day of the final. Off the six of the boxer who made to the finals, four claimed the coveted title of ‘Junior National Champion’ while two had to be content with a silver medal finish. SSCB bagged the overall title with eight medals ? four gold, two silver and two bronze.

The team got off to a brilliant start winning the first two bouts of the day. PL Prasad (49kg) and Dheeraj Singh (52kg) notched up similar wins to clinch the gold medal in the light fly weight and the fly weight division respectively. Prasad the reigning junior national champion was up against Andhra boxer K Sagar. Sagar the 2011 Youth National silver medallist displayed great technique and maturity to make to the finals, but came up short against the experience of Prasad. A quarter-finalist at the 2011 Junior World Championships, the services boxer started aggressively, not letting Sagar settle into his usual rhythm; he quickly took a 3 nil lead in the first round. In the second round Sagar tried hard to get back in the game, but?Prasad was relentless with his attacking jabs and made it a five point game by the end of the second. He continued with his offensive intent in the final round as well and went on to claim his third junior national gold medal with a 14:5 victory on points.?“My strategy was to go all out and not give my opponent space to play his natural game. Thanks to my coaches advises, the tactics paid off and helped me win the gold. Overall it has been a very good tournament for me and I am quite happy with my performance”,?expressed an elated Prasad after his gold medal winning feat. A product of the Army Boys Sports Company, Prasad was also very appreciative of the efforts of his coaches and the support provided by the Army Sport Institute, Pune.

In the summit clash of the fly weight division Dheeraj took on 2011 silver medallist at the Junior Nationals A. Silambarasan of Tamil Nadu. The 2009 Sub-Junior Nationals gold medallist started cautiously, but soon overpowered Silambarasan with his hard hitting jabs and body blows. He was leading 11:6 by the end of the second round. The final round was a mere formality with Dheeraj continuing to dominate play, he eventually bagged the title with a 15:8 win on points.

Reigning youth national champion in the light welter weight class, SSCB boxer Deepak Tanwar capped of a brilliant performance securing the gold medal in style. Tanwar, who has also featured on the senior tour and bagged the silver medal at the 2011 Super Cup in Mumbai, was in great nick and hammered Akash Kumar of UP in the finals (15:9). Sandeep Sharma of the SSCB successfully defended his Junior National title against Kailash Gill of Chandigarh in the middle weight category. He dominated proceeding from the get go and went on to claim his second successive junior nationals gold medal with an 18:9 victory.

Services boxers Abhishek Beniwal (81kg) and Deepak (91kg) playing in the light heavy weight and the heavy weight category respectively, had to be contest with a silver medal finish after losing out in the final round of the championship. Beniwal a silver medallist at the Youth Nationals last year suffered defeat at the hands of Naveen Kumar from Bihar in hard fought contest. Deepak on the other was completely at bay against the powerful hitting of silver medal winner at the 2011 youth men’s nationals Amritpreet Singh of Punjab.

Haryana claimed the runner’s up trophy with three gold medals. Aman Indora beat Md. Hussain Uddin of Andhra Pradesh (13:12) to take the gold in the bantam weight division while Manjeet Singh Panghal drubbed Gurleen Singh of Punjab (7:6) to win the welter weight title. Narender Berwal hammered Hitesh of Meghalaya into submission to claim top honours in the super heavy weight class.
