Indian Women Pugilists To Return Home From the World Championships On 21 May 2012

After securing the all important Olympic berth and a bronze medal from the 7th AIBA World Women Boxing Championships at Qinhuangdao, China, the Indian Women’s team will return to home base on the 21st May 2012. Five times World Champion MC Mary Kom (51kg) became the only Indian women to have qualified for the 2012 London Olympics in the first and only Olympic qualifying tournament for the discipline. ‘Magnificent Mary’ missed out on a medal this time around, but managed to book her ticket for the London games when Nicola Adams of England, who beat the 29 year old Manipuri in the quarter-finals, defeated Russia's Elena Savelyeva 11-6 in the semi-finals of the championship. Kavita Chahal (+81kg) emerged as the lone Indian woman boxer to win a medal at the event. The heavy weight boxer had to settle for a bronze medal finish after losing out to Kazakhstan's Yuldus Mamatkulova (9:15) in the semi-final.
