Magnificent Mary KOM makes a Rousing Start at 6th Asian Women Boxing Championships at Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

The 6TH Asian Women Boxing Championships with 92 boxers representing 19 countries got underway at 3.00 pm on 19 March 2012 at the National Indoor Stadium at the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar. The Hon?ble Indian Ambassador to Mongolia Shri Satbir Singh attended the Opening Ceremony and interacted with Indian contingent after the first day?s session. Indian boxers had a bye on the first day.

On day two ie. 20 March 2012, 5 times World Champion Mary Kom who moved up from her customary 48 kgs to the Olympic 51 kgs weight category, gave a perfect start for the Indian Women?s Boxing Team by defeating Thailand?s Indoor Asian Games Gold Medalist Laopeam Peamwilai on point 6:4. Although the Thai boxer was slightly taller of the two, it was mental domination by Mary that gave her a slender lead of 2:1 pts by the end of Round 1. In Round 2 the lead was increased to 3:1 but in Round 3 the Thai girl came back strongly to reduce the deficit but Mary still lead 4:3. Round 4 was a tactical victory for Mary as she delivered two crisp blows towards the end and she romped home the winner on pts 6:4. She now meets Nandinsetseg Myagmardul of Mongolia in the quarterfinals on 22 March 2012.

In the 57 kgs, Mandakini Chanu defeated Rahemi Sadaf of Afghanistan by Referee Stopping the Contest in the fourth round as Mandakini was far superior to the Afghanistan girl. She will now meet Kil Ok Kim of Peoples Republic of Korea on 22 March 2012.

On 21 March, India will four boxers in the fray with Pinki Jangra (48 kgs) who will play against Dina Ilyubayeva of Kazakhstan while in the 54 kgs Sonia Lather will play Vidhushika Prabhadi Mohott (Sri Lanka). Similarly in 60 kgs Sarita Devi will have her bout against Gulzhaina Ubinayazova of Kazakhstan and in the 64 kgs Meena Rani will play against Uyanga Erdenesoyal of Mongolia.

The other matches of 22 March are Monica Saun (69 kgs) against Moldir Bazarbayeva of Kazakhstan in the quarter finals while Pooja Rani is pitted against Undram Erdenesoyol of Mongolia.

On 24 March Bhagyabati Kachari (81 kgs) will play against Meiqing Yuan of China and Kavita (+81 kgs) will meet Lazzat Kungeibayeva of Kazakhstan.

In addition to the Indian Contingent of Women Boxers and Support Staff, Inda is also represented on the Technical conduct side by Mr Kishen Narsi, AIBA Executive Member who is an International Technical Official (Competition Jury), Dr TK Tamta International Technical Official (Medical Jury) and Mrs Sonia Kanwar International Referee & judge (AIBA 1 Star).
