Naveen Settles For A Silver At Junior Boxing World Championships In Astana

Naveen Kumar’s (50kg) brilliant run at the AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan came to an end one step short of winning the title. The 14 year old who had surprised Russia's National Junior Championship silver medallist Dzabrail Vizirkhanov could not emulate the his feat in the finals, and had to settle for silver medal. Up against England's defending European Junior Champion and British Junior Championships gold medallist, Pat McCormack, the Indian boxer could not get into his usual rhythm. In-fact both the boxes opened cautiously looking to size each other. But it was the English lad who broke the shackles first and took the early advantage with a crucial one point lead after the opening round. From there he kept building on his lead never allowing Naveen the space to make his move. India’ Heydar Aliyev Junior Cup winner in the end lost tittle fight with a score of 4:8. He will now have to settle with a silver medal.

Earlier in the tournament, Sandeep Kumar (57kg) lost his semi-final bout to Aliyor Noraliev of Uzbekistan. The 15 year old lost to the Uzbek boxer 4:10 on points and had to make do with a bronze medal for his performance.
