Reigning junior national champion Aman Indora (56kg) capped off a brilliant performance at the 2012 A. Agalarov Cup – an international youth boxing tournament being held in Baku, Azerbaijan – on Sunday (23 December 2012).  The 18 year old defeated Uzbek boxer Abdujabbarov Azizbek in the championship round to bag the bantam weight title and that too in his very first international tournament.

A south paw boxer, Indora qualified for the finals of the bantam weight division after registering a brilliant victory over local lad Orkhan Aliyev of the Azerbaijan A team. In the finals as well, he was in sublime form – the Haryana lad put up a solid defence and dominated the bout from the very start. Azizbek was hardly able to land any scoring punches, Indora on the other hand kept nicking points with his strong right and left-hook combinations. He went on to claim his first international medal with a resounding 4-1 win on points. The Haryana state junior champion was elated with his performance and stated, “I it was a very exciting tournament and I am very happy with the way I fought throughout the competition, I am thankful to my coaches for helping me prepare well and win the gold medal”.

Silambarasan, who recently won the gold at the 2012 Indo-Sri Lanka Duel Boxing Championship in Colombo, went up against Yusifuda Masud of Azerbaijan. The 17 year old put up a strong fight against some heavy hitting from Masud, but in the end came up short and had to make do with a silver medal. He lost on points (2-3). Gill, a former junior national champion was completely out of sorts in the battle for the middle weight title against Zakirov Roman of Uzbekistan In the end lost 0-5 on points. Abhishek Beniwal (81kg) was the fourth Indian boxer to clinch a medal at the tournament, but had to be content with bronze medal performance after losing out in the round of four.

Out of the six Indian boxers that participated in the 2012 A. Agalarov Cup, four were able to land a podium finish. With one gold medal, two silver medals and a bronze medal the Indian boxing team won the second runners up trophy in the tournament. Indian coach CP Vilasini Bijilal was extremely pleased with the team’s performance and said, “This tournament has turned out to be a really good exposure for our boys. The level of competition was quite good and the boys have shown a lot of promise against some tough opposition. The confidence gained with the performance here will do wonders for their careers”.
