Over 30 Teams Confirm Participation In The 21st Presidents Cup Boxing Tournament

The 21st edition of the traditional President’s Cup International Boxing Tournament will be held in Jakarta, Indonesia from July 2nd to 9th, 2011. The Indonesian Amateur Boxing Federation (Pertina) announced earlier that it would hold the President’s Cup next month, bringing back the event after a seven-year hiatus. The tournament that was scrapped in 2004, will this year witness over 200 boxers from around 30 countries vying for top honours.

In addition to the host nation, which will be fielding three local teams (Garuda, Elang and Rajawali), traditionally strong boxing nations Russia, China, Kazakhstan will also be participating along with India, Afghanistan, Australia, Bhutan, Botswana, Hong Kong, Iran, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Sierra Leone, Singapore, South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkmenistan and Vietnam. With the first qualifying event for the 2012 London Olympics, the AIBA World Championships fast approaching, countries are looking to provide pugilists with ample exposure in order to assess the level of global competition and to get better acquainted with the new scoring system.

The 10 member team, including seven boxers, two coaches and one doctor will leave the capital on the 2nd of July to partake in the event. The Indian squad that will be spearheaded by Asian Games silver medallist V. Santosh Kumar (64kg) and South Asian Games gold medallist Chhote Lal Yadav (56kg) is currently honing their skills at the SAI centre in NIS Patiala.

In spite of a tough competition, Chief Coach GS Sandhu, is hopeful of a good showing. “Facing stronger opponent always improves one’s game. It’s not going to be easy in Indonesia, but I am positive of a sound performance. We should be able to bag a few medals in the light weight categories”, he said. He further expressed, “We have been using the new scoring structure at the on-going training camp in NIS Patiala and are working hard perfect our technique and strategies”.
