Devendro marches into the quarters
Laishram Devendro Singh (49kg) continued his winning spree at the 2012 Olympics as he upset 2008 Beijing Games silver medallist and former World Champion Serdamba Purevdorj of Mongolia in the round of 16 of the light fly weight division at the Excel arena on Saturday.
The diminutive dynamo from Manipur, making his Olympic debut, was not for once overawed by his more experienced opponent and his previous records. Picking up from where he left in the round of 32, the nimble footed 20 year old was his usual aggressive self right from the start. With the help of some quick fire combinations he took a 4:3 lead by the end of the first round. Devendro maintained his relentless attacking in the second round as well to which the Mongolian boxer had no answer. A hard left hook by the Indian sent the 2011 World Championship bronze medallist to the floor with the referee giving him a standing count. By the end of the round Devendro had made it a 3 point game (8:5). In the final three minutes, Singh upped the tempo and once again sent Purevdorj to the canvas courtesy a cracking straight punch. A late comeback from the Mongolian was also not enough to stop Devendro from taking the round 8: 6 and marching into quarters with a 16:11 overall win on points.
The feisty Indian will have to keep the intensity going in the next round as well as he takes on Beijing Olympic bronze medallist and 2010 Commonwealth Games Champion Patrick Barnes of Ireland on Wednesday (8 Aug 2012).
