Devendro Singh Trounces Velazquez Joselito to enter Pre Quarter Finals of World Boxing Championships at Baku

The baby of the Indian Contingent who can now be called a ?Giant Killer? , Devendro Singh, trounced a hapless Velazquez Joselito of Mexico in the 49 kgs on pts 40:19 to become the fourth Indian boxer to enter the pre quarter finals of the AIBA World Boxing Championships in progress. Right from the start of the first round Devendro attacked Velazquez relentlessly and also made the Referee give the Mexican a standing count of eight. Devendro scored at will and ended round 1 with a score of 19:7. In round 2 he consolidated his lead to make it 31:14. In the third round the Referee gave a second standing count to the Mexican boxer due to hard blows to the head by Devendro. The bout ended with Devendro winning by a phenomenal score of 40:19 pts, which will probably be the highest score in this World Championship. Devendro?s next opponent in the Pre Quarter Finals tomorrow will be 7th Seeded Carlos Quipo of Ecuador.

Devendro who had the rookie tag till now is a product of Sports Authority of India?s Army Boys Sports Company scheme who had learned his boxing skills at the Army Sports Institute, Pune. He was a new entrant to the National Coaching Camp a couple of months ago and he surprised well known reputed boxers such as Amandeep Singh and Nanao Singh to seal a place for himself at this Olympic qualifying Tournament. His performance at the World Championships so far has proved right the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation?s decision to field him instead of old war horses Amandeep or Nanao Singh who are also equally talented and deserving.

Action photos of Devendro Singh are attached.
