Krishnan Advances But Samota Bows Out At Baku

The India team returned with a bag of mixed results on day four of competition at the 2011 AIBA World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. Guangzhou Asian Games gold medallist Vikas Krishnan (69kg) advanced to the round of 32 with an emphatic victory. But it was curtains for Commonwealth Games gold-medallist Paramjeet Samota (+91kg) as he lost his opening round bout.

Krishnan, making his welterweight (69kg) debut at the World Championships was up against Asadullo Boimurodov of Kyrgyzstan in his opening bout. The 19 year old displayed great maturity against his more experience opponent. He started aggressively taking the game away from the Kyrgyz boxer in the very first round with a commanding five point lead. The 2010 youth world champion was relentless as he kept increasing the margin and went on to beat Boimurodov comprehensively on points 16:8.  In the Heavy weight section Samota took on Vitalijus Subacius of Lithuania. The Indian boxer was slow of the blocks and the Lithuania boxer took advantage, gaining a two point lead after the opening round.  Samota a bronze medallist at last year's Asian Games, came back strongly in the second to make it a one point game at 7:8. In the final round though, the 23 year old lost crucial points and with it the bout. He lost 12:14 on points.

The fourth day of the Championship will see Commonwealth Games gold medallist Manoj Kumar, take to the ring. The 24 year old, who is making his second appearance at the World Championships, will open against bronze medal winner at the Commonwealth Games Valentino Knowles of the Bahamas; a boxer he defeated at the New Delhi CW games.
